Kogi State is set to benefit from a $26.2 million allocation under the World Bank’s $500 million initiative aimed at strengthening human capital development across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. This funding is designed to enhance access to quality basic education and primary healthcare services, key pillars of societal growth and development.
Speaking at a Citizens’ Sensitization Programme in Lokoja on Thursday, the State Commissioner for Finance, Budget, and Economic Planning, Asiwaju Idris, highlighted the significance of the funding. He noted that the World Bank-assisted initiative, implemented under the HOPE-GOV program, will provide the state with substantial resources to bolster critical sectors and improve the well-being of its residents.
“Education and healthcare are the foundation of a productive and resilient society,” Idris stated. “Enhanced investment in these areas will accelerate progress, foster inclusive growth, and empower our citizens with better opportunities.”
Dr. Habibat Tijani, the State Accountant General and World Bank Fiscal Focal Person, emphasized that the HOPE-GOV initiative would support the state government’s efforts to enhance fiscal transparency, improve budget credibility, and ensure accountability in the utilization of funds. She added that the program aims to boost financing for education and healthcare while also improving the recruitment and performance of teachers and medical professionals.
In the education sector, Commissioner Wemi Jones praised the initiative, commending Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s commitment to transforming the system. He revealed that the current administration has allocated over ₦1.2 billion to cover external examination fees for students in primary and secondary schools, easing financial burdens on families and promoting academic excellence.
Similarly, Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abdulazeez Adams, highlighted the initiative’s potential to revolutionize healthcare services in the state. He affirmed that the HOPE-GOV program will significantly enhance access to essential medical services, ensuring better healthcare delivery for residents.
With this funding, Kogi State is poised to make significant strides in human capital development, reinforcing its commitment to building a stronger, healthier, and more educated society.
